First business credit card with fair credit: what issuers actually offer (2026)
Edited by Moe Ameen · Published
Few business card issuers say what credit they want. Of the cards we checked, only Capital One's Spark 1% Classic names a level: fair. Secured business cards are the other route for a thin or damaged file: Bank of America's needs a $1,000 deposit, FNBO's $2,000, and Valley's 110% of the limit. Corporate cards from Brex, Ramp and Mercury skip personal credit but don't take sole proprietors.
Key takeaways
- Capital One's Spark 1% Classic is the only card we found that says it's for fair credit.
- Secured business cards still exist at Bank of America, FNBO and Valley National Bank.
- We found no secured business card on Wells Fargo's, U.S. Bank's, PNC's or Truist's sites.
- None of the bank cards we checked says which bureaus it reports to.
Which business credit cards accept fair credit?
Capital One's Spark 1% Classic is the only one we found that says so: it lists its credit level as fair, with no annual fee.
Its purchase APR is 29.24% variable, and sole proprietors can apply with an SSN instead of an EIN [1]. Capital One says the Spark Classic reports primary cardholder activity to the personal credit bureaus [13], so it shows on your personal report too; see personal guarantees on business cards.
How do secured business credit cards work?
You put down a deposit that becomes or backs your credit limit. Bank of America asks $1,000, FNBO $2,000, and Valley 110% of the limit.
- Bank of America: $1,000 minimum deposit, credit line equal to the deposit, no annual fee, 26.99% variable APR. The deposit earns no interest, and the bank says it reviews accounts and may move you to an unsecured card [2][3].
- FNBO: a single deposit of $2,000 to $10,000, a $39 annual fee and a 24.24% variable APR. FNBO says the deposit earns interest [4].
- Valley National Bank: a deposit of 110% of your limit, up to $25,000, opened in a branch, for businesses operating in New Jersey, New York, Florida or Alabama. After a six-cycle 0% intro, the APR is 14.70% to 26.00% [5][6].
Am I personally liable on a secured business card?
On the two we could read terms for, yes. Bank of America and Valley both make you personally liable alongside the business.
Bank of America's terms say the business and you, personally, will each be liable for all charges [3]. Valley's say you agree to be personally responsible, individually and jointly with the company [6]. The deposit secures the line, but it doesn't take you off the hook for the balance.
Can I get a business card without a personal credit check?
Yes, from corporate and charge cards that underwrite the business: Mercury IO, Brex and Ramp say they don't check personal credit.
Mercury runs no credit check at IO sign-up [7]. Brex underwrites on business financials [8], and Ramp says it runs no personal credit checks [9]. Coast, a fuel card, may use a soft pull that doesn't affect your score [10]. The catch is eligibility: Brex serves US-incorporated companies, and Coast doesn't take sole proprietorships [8][10]. See sole proprietor vs LLC.
Will a secured business card build business credit?
Ask before you apply. None of the bank cards we checked names the bureaus it reports to; Mercury and Coast do.
Bank of America says on-time payments could improve your business credit over time, without naming bureaus [2]. Mercury reports IO payments to Experian, Equifax and Dun & Bradstreet [7], and Coast reports monthly to the SBFE, which passes data to the business bureaus [10]. Nav's Credit Builder Card, still in beta, says it reports to business bureaus only [11].
