Credit cards guides
Glisten's credit card guides explain how cards work before you pick one. They cover how interest is charged, what balance transfers and intro rates cost, how rewards and fees add up, and which kinds of cards fit your credit, using Regulation Z, the CFPB and issuers' own terms. Two calculators show what paying off a balance, or moving it to a new card, would cost.
How does credit card interest work?
Interest is charged on your average daily balance at a daily rate, and the Federal Reserve put the average APR on accounts paying interest at 22.36% in August 2026. Paying the full statement balance by the due date usually avoids it.
Is a balance transfer worth it?
A transfer can cut interest while the intro rate lasts, but you'll usually pay a fee, typically 3% to 5%. Under federal rules an intro rate has to last at least six months unless you're more than 60 days late.
Which kind of rewards card fits how I spend?
Cash back pays a set amount. Points and miles are worth whatever the issuer says for each way you redeem them, and the CFPB found about one in four people eligible for a sign-up bonus missed its requirements.
Which cards fit my credit?
Issuers label cards by the credit they're aimed at, and federal rules make them check you can afford the payments. With thin or damaged credit, a secured card or being added as an authorized user are two ways to start.
What happens if I miss a payment or close a card?
A late payment brings a fee, and once you're more than 60 days late the issuer can apply a penalty rate. A card closed in good standing can stay on your report for up to 10 years.
